The Arrowcreek Modern residence sits on the alluvial fan of Mount Rose on the southern edge of the Truckee Meadows and is typical of the eastern front of the Sierra Nevada mountains with steep rocky terrain covered in sage scrub. The site is highly exposed which offers panoramic views and warming winter sun but also creates challenges in wind exposure and hot summer south and west facing outdoor spaces.
The concept for the landscape was ‘the oasis in the desert’ with a goal of celebrating both the aesthetic of the high desert and the reprieve of lush sanctuary. This concept was achieved through developing a lush landscape zone surrounding the building as well as utilizing the architecture itself. The design celebrates the aesthetic of the high desert and Truckee Meadows by framing key vistas and views of the native landscape and providing points of view revelation.
